GeneratePress just announced GP Premium 2.0 as an alpha release. Not only does it allow you to take the performance-focused WordPress theme to the next level, but it also introduces theme building features using the Gutenberg block editor and GenerateBlocks.

GP Premium 2.0 & GP Theme Builder

With GP Premium 2.0 you can easily create, style and integrate dynamic theme elements. This allows you to build stunning page heros, a custom author box, custom sidebars and footers. You can even create your very own custom elements populated with custom field content and category-specific post layouts as well as single posts and post archive templates. All this without having to install an additional plugin or writing a single line of code!

With the combined power of GeneratePress 3.0 and GenerateBlocks you can now do block-based theme building:

• Add dynamic data to GenerateBlocks blocks
• With content templates you’re in complete control of the theme design and layout and no longer limited to the WordPress Customizer. Templates can be used for archives, single posts and pages.
• With display rules you can assign different templates to different areas of your site
• Create page hero templates directly in the block editor
• Design of own post meta areas such as author avatars, author names, posted/updated on dates, and comment links with post meta templates
• Create post navigation templates for single posts including titles, featured images, and author names of the next and previous posts
• Build archive pagination templates by using Next/Previous Posts Page link options

This is the first exciting step towards the conversion of GeneratePress into a hybrid full-site editing theme.

In other news, they have completely overhauled the site library using React and are in the process of ditching jQuery in favour of Vanilla JS.
