ShortPixel CDN Introduces New Billing System
Effective 1st March 2021, the ShortPixel team introduced a new billing system that applies to user of the ShortPixel CDN users including ShortPixel Adaptive Images (SPAI) and Autoptimize. They also announced some important news regarding AVIF and WebP.
New Billing System For ShortPixel CDN
Previously, ShortPixel charged WordPress plugins using the ShortPixel CDN one credit every 30 days for each optimized image size. As of 1st March 2021, however, you will simply be billed according to the CDN traffic used.
Each image optimization credit equals 5 MB of CDN traffic, which is good for serving an average of 50+ optimized images. So you pay less for more! For example, the free plan can be used to serve 500MB per month, which on average is enough for 500 visits per month.
Note that if you are using only the ShortPixel Image Optimizer plugin or SPAI along with your own CDN, this change will not affect you.
To improve their global coverage and overall speed, they have also changed the CDN provider to Bunny.Net. As a result, they now have at least two POPs on every continent!
AVIF & WebP Updates
Starting with version 4.22, ShortPixel offers AVIF image generation and optimization as well. As you may already know, for years the ShortPixel Image Optimizer has been supporting WebP generation for free. Both these “next-gen” image formats require a lot of processing power to be created (up to 100 times more CPU for AVIF). That’s why they decided to expand their infrastructure and start charging one credit for each WebP and/or AVIF image. This change will take effect on May 10, 2021.
