SiteGround: New Anti-Bot AI to Protect Against Brute-Force Attacks

SiteGround recently launched a new AI-based bot prevention system that blocks potential unauthorized logins into websites. The Anti-Bot AI has been built in-house by SiteGround’s own DevOps.

Anti-Bot AI

Since its launch, the Anti-Bot AI is protecting their servers from millions of brute-force attacks every single day. Also it is saving a tremendous amount of server resources.

SiteGround’s artificial intelligence is monitoring various indicators to uncover malicious behaviour patterns and block bad traffic. You’ll find some of them below:

  • Failed login attempts in WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Magento, etc.
  • Number of simultaneous connections to different URLs
  • Different request types & known DDoS vulnerabilities in apps
  • Dynamic list of bad user agents

Once marked as malicious, the respective IP address or user agent will instantly be blocked and a Captcha page will be displayed. False positives will be minimized due to its learning capabilities. If a captcha has been solved by a human user for instance, the AI will whitelist the IP address or user agent.

Good news: All SiteGround customers are protected no matter if they are using dedicated servers, shared, cloud or Enterprise hosting.

Side Note: HTTPS

Speaking of security, SiteGround were among the first hosting providers to offer free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates. Soon after they automated the SSL issuing and added a 1-click WordPress SSL configuration to their SG Optimizer plugin. Now they added two new options to their Letโ€™s Encrypt tool in cPanel: HTTPS Enforce & External Links Rewrite.
