DigitalOcean: Memory-Optimized Droplets Now Generally Available

Your appsโ€™ performance and stability can depend greatly on the characteristics of the infrastructure you are using. Thatโ€™s the reason why DigitalOcean have introduced both General Purpose and CPU-Optimized Droplets over the past couple of years. As these new Droplet types still donโ€™t address every business need, DigitalOcean are now making one more virtual machine instance type generally available. Meet Memory-Optimized Droplets that come with memory and dedicated compute in a ratio of 8GB:1vCPU.

Memory-Optimized Droplets

Starting now, Memory-Optimized Droplets are generally available in four data centers including New York (NYC1, NYC3), San Francisco (SFO2), and Amsterdam (AMS3). These Droplet types will be available in Singapore (SGP1) within the next few weeks and in even more data centers in the coming months.

If your cloud-based virtual machine runs low on RAM, applications slow down considerably, or even crash due to OOMs โ€“ dreaded Out of Memory errors. Thatโ€™s when you might want to have Memory-Optimized Droplets.

Considering lofty user expectations of near instantaneous performance and rock solid stability, these kind of Droplets are especially useful for the following sorts of workloads:

  • High-performance SQL or NoSQL databases
  • Web scale in-memory caches and indexes
  • Real-time big data processing
  • Memory-intensive, production business apps

Virtual machines with 2vCPUs, 16GB of RAM, 50 GB SSD, and 4TB transfer cost $90 per month. Pricing scales from there as you add additional compute, memory, storage, and bandwidth.

Existing DigitalOcean customers need to log into their account to create Memory-Optimized Droplets. From there, you can spin up your VMs in just 55 seconds or less.
