How To Easily Turn WordPress Into A Scalable SaaS
For our next own project, we want to offer a WordPress WaaS (Website-as-a-Service) in a niche market. We actually had Multisite in mind first, but then decided on WPCS, an Amsterdam based multi-tenant WordPress cloud platform.
WPCS
WPCS allows you to easily turn WordPress into a scalable, secure and high-performant SaaS which is powered by AWS and Kubernetes. You can provision websites aka tenants with shared functionality but separate content in no time.
Multisite vs Multitenancy
We chose multi-tenant WordPress over Multisite for three main reasons. Firstly, Multisite is not scalable. This becomes a problem at the latest when the project is successful and can only be managed with a high commitment of developers. Secondly, if there is a problem on one WordPress site, all other sites in the network are also affected. This will become a problem if the websites of paying customers are no longer accessible. Thirdly, many WordPress plugins do not support Multisite. In our view, Multisite should therefore only be used for private or foreseeably small commercial projects.
Feature Highlights
Letโs take a look at the main features of WPCS:
- Multi-tenant WordPress
- Powered by AWS & Kubernetes
- Version Control
- Serverless hosting
- Snapshots
- Manual backups
- Automatic SSL Certificate
- WPCS CLI
- Self-healing technology
- Easy-to-use WPCS Console
- Free migration plugin
- Less than 5 minute provision time
So much for the theory. Our project is still in the planning phase and we will update this post with our experiences over time.
WaaS Storefront
WPCS also offers you the possibility to quickly and easily set up a storefront for your WaaS to sell and automatically set up WordPress sites. Currently, WooCommerce is used for this. However, the WPCS team is currently looking at SureCart as an alternative. Stay tuned!
Pricing
WPCS offers four flexible pricing plans starting from as low as $15 per month and $2.7 per site per month. Billing is on an hourly basis.
