From FooBar to Themify's Announcement Bar

We are planning something big later this year here on QU.PN and want to promote the launch in an effective and appealing way. In the attic we’ve found and installed an old copy of FooBar which we once had purchased on CodeCanyon. However, there are several reasons that made us drop Foobar and grab a copy of the Announcement Bar plugin instead.

Even though the author is claiming that the FooBar notification bar plugin is still compatible with the current WordPress version (last update in Feb 2014), we had been facing a few issues related to it. Its developer is currently undertaking a complete rewrite of the plugin which will likely be released around April 2015. Well, as release dates are almost never accurate and often delayed, we didn’t want to wait that long. Looking for an alternative, we came across a lovely plugin called Announcement Bar developed by Themify.

The Announcement Bar plugin is just WOW! It allows you to automate, manage and schedule announcements on your WordPress site with ease and comes with all the features one would expect from a notification bar plugin plus a few more. According to Themify, it is a “little plugin with many features”:

Conclusion:

We rather renew our subscription to receive continuous support and updates than just pay a one-time fee for a plugin that lacks updates, support and new feature releases. Don’t get us wrong, we loved Foobar and still do. We might even give it another try after the promised update. For the moment, however, Announcement Bar is our weapon of choice when it comes to notification bar plugins for WordPress.
