DigitalOcean: Announcing New Pricing for Snapshots
DigitalOcean recently announced that they will begin to charge for snapshot storage starting October 1, 2016. They will bill you $0.05 per gigabyte per month. You will not be charged for the total disk space allocated for your droplet, but for the compressed snapshot though.
Also, it is possoble to take snapshots without switching off your droplet. To avoid unexpected costs, simply delete all snapshots which are not needed anymore.
By the way snapshots are backups that are triggered manually, while backups are generated automatically on a weekly basis (if enabled).
